Lot Title:
1848 (N-32, R.6), "Condition Census" PCGS VF-35.
Description:
Grellman assigned an R.7- rating, but since then, cherrypickers have increased the population, and diminished rarity to R.6-. The condition census was briefly mentioned by Grellman as "45-35-plus about a dozen less than VF". Leather-brown patina has passable visual appeal, and the surfaces are free from environmental problems, allowing clear visibility of the die-markers, most important of which is a die-crack from the second "S" in STATES across the leaves of the wreath down to RI in AMERICA. Even for a commercial grade, VF-35 seems too forgiving of flat central details, and a minor horizontal scratch lays just beneath the center of the hair bun. Probably EAC 15 or so, and that should be enough to place this coin high in the condition census.

N-32, R.6-. A very low condition census only mentions a couple of coins in the Grellman book, and an EAC grade might place this one at the VG-10 level. Strong VF sharpness will make that seem like a... |

On the scale of eye-appeal, this cent surely rates a ten-out-of-ten rating! Surfaces are pristine, and the strike borders on being full with just a tad of weakness a the top of the coronet. More... |
