Lot Title:
1828 12 Stars (C-2, R.2, die state I). PCGS MS-64 BN.
Description:
The whimsically blundered "12 stars" obverse occurs with only one die marriage: C-2. "TES OF AM" are boldly repunched, and Breen calls this the "perfect die" obverse and "very rare". Blue-velvet patina immediately greets the eye, layered over three-quarters of the obverse, avoiding really only the date area. The reverse sees more of this same delicate color intermixed with magenta-brown toning, yet all this patina causes only minimal degradation of the luster. Of note are a comma-shaped dig in front of Liberty's nose, and it is surrounded by a curiously textured greyish discoloration. Whether these are related phenomena is not apparent. C-2 is not really rare at all, but the popularity of the die marriage is augmented by Red Book collectors, not to mention those buyers who enjoy tangible evidence of a notorious and charming mint blunder.

C-2 is the only die marriage for the popular "12 stars" obverse, and this is the common die-state II. Certainly the coin is not as nice as a competing UNC example in the sale, and better struck on... |

Glossy mahogany surfaces amplify the visual appeal of this die cutter's error variety. A meager number of ticks noticed with a glass, but no unsightly marks or blemishes. Well struck for an issue... |
