Lot Title:
1856 (C-1, R.1) PCGS MS-64 RB.
Description:
Breen references a "rust pit in I n UNITED" to attribute C-1. Remarkable for the quantity of superb, coppery mint-red color, the obverse is about 50% red, and the reverse 80% so at least. Tinges of sienna-tan patina deny a full red designation, of course, and one has the feeling that this coin could have been very gently dipped in a very dilute solution, since there is just a hint of pinkish hue on both sides, and the sienna-grey patina that compels an RB designation is a little translucent in areas. Nonetheless, plenty of luster remains, particularly on the reverse. A nice, sharp early strike.
