Lot Title:

1802 2/0 Reverse of 1802 (C-2, R.3). NGC F-15.
|
Description:
|
The rust chip between "IB" is visible, but the central reverse is weak, putting this between die-states II and III. This is a rather amazing 1802 half-cent when one considers the difficulties the mint had in striking these. Most were struck on cut-down large-cents, themselves already "spoiled" coins, putting their little sisters at a distinct disadvantage from their very inception. That said, this grey-brown examples display highly acceptable planchet quality, with essentially no sign of corrosion, and startlingly enough, faint tinges of mint red still clinging with great stubbornness to major devices. Even the letters in LIBERTY glow with a feeble reddish tinge, and this seems to be natural coloration, not something "added" later. Several faint, old straight scratches cross over Liberty's tresses, but they are obviously worn and toned like the rest of the coin, making them invisible without visual aid. Astute observes will notice slightly doubling on the left edge of the lowest curls -- undoubtedly strike doubling, to user the modern term. Sharpness is remarkably close to NGC's F-15, bearing in mind that weakness left of center of HALF CENT is expected for the C-2. Seemingly a nice EAC 12 and quite possibly in or near the condition census.

It is conjectured that the half cents of 1802 were struck on planchet stock rolled from impaired large cents. As is characteristic for this issue, it is dark in color, and the planchet is quite rough... |
