Lot Title:
1802 2/0 Reverse Struck Over 1802 Cent (C-2, R.3). PCGS GD-4.
Description:
Die state is undetermined because of the advanced wear, but most certainly an early die-state, since die cracks are not readily apparent, and HALF CENT is sharp on the reverse. Odds are in favor of die state I. The host coin is an 1802 large-cent, as can be seen with an upside-down "1802" right of the fraction. At RTY, dentilation from the host coin remains barely visible. Worn almost smooth, details are consistent with the PCGS grade, and a net EAC grade is probably congruent.

The rust chip between "IB" is visible, but the central reverse is weak, putting this between die-states II and III. This is a rather amazing 1802 half-cent when one considers the difficulties the... |

It is conjectured that the half cents of 1802 were struck on planchet stock rolled from impaired large cents. As is characteristic for this issue, it is dark in color, and the planchet is quite rough... |
