Lot Title:
1804 (S-266C, R.2) VG.
Description:
Die state "c" for 1804 is identified by cuds over RTY on the obverse and MERIC on the reverse. A poor rate of survival from a paltry mintage of under 100,000 pieces ensures desirability as a key to the date series, and even in low grade, these are avidly sought. Sharpness from the standpoint of just circulation probably extends to F-15 for this example, but the surfaces have seen moderate corrosion in the past. To alleviate the offensive effects of corrosion, both sides have been burnished, and that has certainly smoothed out the details to a nearly palatable level. Adjusting for all the aforementioned problems could put the net grade in VG range.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
