Lot Title:
1785 Vermont copper. VERMONTS variety (Ryder-2, R.4 to R.3) PCGS XF-45.
Description:
Landscape copper is notorious for poor planchet stock, and even this example, housed in a PCGS XF-45 holder, displays mild to moderate micro-porosity so characteristic of the series. Curiously, PCGS has abbreviated "Vermnt" on the slab insert, but of course the actually spelling variation shown here is "VERMONTS". In spite of the aforementioned planchet challenges encountered by the early State mint, the coloration exhibited here exceeds expectations, offering pleasing tan highlights on the high-relief elements, immediately surrounded by chocolate-brown tone that then blends into commendable sienna-tan patina in the fields. The fortuitous effect of this tri-tone color scheme is to enhance apparent detail, and this coin appears even sharper than expected of a commercial "extremely-fine" grade. While the planchet is out of round, another common characteristic of these early "cents", the date is completely on the flan and bold as can be, and aberration in its roundness has not impacted any of the reverse peripheral lettering. Only the top of the letters in PUBLIC are mildly affected.
