(About The Images)
1838 NGC VF-30. 1838 NGC VF-30.
Lot Title: 1838 NGC VF-30.
Description: Just from the standpoint of original quality, and despite considerable wear, this is an unbelievably nice Classic Head gold coin. Vintage surfaces exhibit a rare toning trifecta, with subdued overall mustard-gold color that is beautifully accented by rich royal-gold tints around the device elements, and further emboldened by hints of deep brown abutting the smaller devices. What a marvelous, charming appearance -- such a pleasant diversion from innumerable "enhanced" coins on the market! From a technical standpoint, NGC's VF-30 grade appears adequate for the obverse, yet the reverse seems to be fully two grades lower, with VG details. This must be ascribed to a rather extraordinary digression in rate of die wear, since only a single die pair is known for 1838, and other known examples display a similar anomaly. Regardless, collectors who understand and truly value the appeal of fully original coins will find themselves irresistibly drawn to this one.
