Lot Title:

1800 Dotted Date (B-14, BB-194, R.3). ANACS VF-25.
Description:
The "dotted date" appellation given B-14 is in reference to points of raised metal clustered around the zero in the date, where defective pits in the die imparted the stray dots. Although not rare (R.3) as a die marriage, the variety is popular with Redbook collectors, since attribution characteristics are easy to see without magnification. ANACS has supplied a VF-25 grade in this case, and that is a reasonable assessment for a bust dollar that has E PLURIBUS UNUM just barely readable on the reverse. The central portion of the hair is fairly flat, but larger details in the tresses are plainly visible. The reverse is more original than the obverse and borders on being ideal, with a glossy area over the portrait being all that prevents the obverse from being quite as nice as the other side.
