Lot Title:
1881 (BG-957 "Pseudo BG-957A", Low R.6) half-dollar. PCGS MS-65.
Description:
In the early die state, "CAL" remains prominently featured on the reverse, and PCGS has attributed this as BG-957 A, with the "A" being in effect a die-state designation. In later use of the reverse die, "CAL" would effaced from the field. Being struck from the early dies, this is an amazingly sharp coin, semi-prooflike on the obverse and fully prooflike on the reverse (though not so noted on the slab).
