Lot Title:
1787 Massachusetts Half Cent. PCGS VF-30.
Description:
In an event foreshadowing modern times, an audit signed in 1788 by Massachusetts Governor John Hancock discovered that the cost of manufacturing copper cents and half-cents was about double their face value. Much of the cost was lost in creation of the dies and the planchets, but it should be noted that the coins remained in circulation for decades, having been well made of good copper. Perhaps 60 - 80 thousand half-cents were struck and dated 1787, and the example offered here is unusually nice, even at a middle grade of VF-30. Surfaces display lovely vintage leather-brown color and texture, with hardly the slightest distraction visible. One might hope that at a VF-something grade, more of the denomination would show on the eagle's breast, but grading "standards" for Colonial coins are never explained by the grading services and remain immutable, and it is best to judge this piece on the merits of the attractive surface quality.
