Lot Title:
1788 Massachusetts Cent (Ryder 7-M, R.4+, 143.5 grains). VF.
Description:
Looking at past sales records, the R.4+ assigned the Ryder 7-M seems accurate, if not conservative, since the variety seldom appears on the market. Unlike many colonial issues, the Massachusetts cents (and half-cents) tend to be well produced, and this one is struck on a planchet of good quality and excellent dark mahogany color. Struck on center with full denticles on the obverse, the reverse lacks some rim definition along the upper left side, most likely due to a slightly undersized diameter. What appears at first glance to be an abrasion in the field right of the date is in fact a planchet defect, as made, though it is more reddish than the predominant hue.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
