Lot Title:

1844-D AU details/cleaned/tooled.
|
Description:
|
Exceptionally sharp details are actually close to mint state for this 1844-D half-eagle, an issue that isn't rare in general, but has limited availability in the AU-50 and better range. The strike is unusually nice, with complete separation between the two hair curls above the ear, and definition in the feathers that is uncommonly sharp for branch mint gold. In addition, the brassy-gold color is just about ideal for a Dahlonega issue, augmented by flat luster customary to the date. With so many technical characteristics strongly in the coin's favor, it is certainly exasperating to discover that a horizontal scratch has been foolishly tooled out of the obverse left field, jutting outward from Liberty's chin. The "scratch" was scarcely more than a hairline, as can be seen where it extended onto Liberty's neck, and would have been preferable to the abraded appearance now seen in its stead.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
