Lot Title:

1803 Large Stars Reverse. NGC AU details/altered surface.
Description:
A plethora of adjustment marks includes a number of file lines flirting with several stars, and a comparatively huge file mark that passes through ED ST on the reverse, connecting the tip of the eagle's wing in between, all of this being part of the minting procedure, of course. Although housed in an NGC "details only" holder, it is most unwise to repudiate this as a suitable type coin out of hand, because the "altered surface" referenced on the insert refers to little more than some opaque residue strewn about the obverse. It can be seen when the coin is tilted to catch the light just so, and odds are excellent that proper conservation could dismiss the problem entirely. Ignoring any such issues, the sharp definition and mildly reflective fields furnish a coin of considerable aesthetic appeal. Circulation has produced countless minuscule abrasions in the field, but very little actual wear, and indeed, the reverse appears to be virtually mint-state. AU-55 details at minimum overall, with huge upside potential once the coin makes it into a straight-graded slab.
