1803 Large Stars Reverse, Extra Star in Cloud (Breen 1-E, R-4). PCGS AU-58.
Description:
Harry Bass discovered this delightful die cutting error in 1966, and since then, it has become an extremely popular "name" variety - the "extra star", particularly with examples for which the engraving blunder is clear. Low grade coins often lose the feature to circulation rub. The coin presented here offers strong evidence of the anomaly, with all six arms of the extra star clearly outlined on the right side of the final cloud.
From the standpoint of condition, even Mr. Bass might have been satisfied with the pleasing, clean appearance put forth by this lovely coin. Semi-prooflike fields produce a brilliant golden reflection of illumination, and the features are sharply delineated for both primary devices. In fact, virtually no wear is apparent on the highpoints, with the brief stint in circulation implied more by incidental hairlines and trivial handling blemishes in the fields. A fantastic coin on multiple levels!
