Lot Title:
1837 Seated "large date" (Greer-102). AU.
Description:
Digits in the date curve downward, and the tail of the "7" is nicely repunched, leading to attribution as Greer-102, the "large date" logotype. As the earliest "no stars" dime, this is an extremely popular type, but aesthetics play a role as well, as Seated Liberty was never more beautifully portrayed than without the cluttered distraction of the later coins "with stars". A fine die crack trails down the skirt lines toward 4:00 of the obverse, joining a fine knifelike rim at the right edge, pronouncing this as a late die-state. Gorgeous "plate luster" shimmers in the fields and bears practically no signs of the friction that touches the highpoints of the details.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
