Lot Title:
1787 Commecticut (DB Left, "ETLIR'. PCGS AU-53.
Description:
Glossy walnut-brown surfaces are drop-dead gorgeous for a colonial type that was prone to corrosive effects of the eastern seaboard's salty air, and the reverse is a marvel of preservation. In this case, the commercial PCGS grade seems to be readily on par or even above and beyond common sense, and any potential bidder will be delighted with the remarkable level of relief brought up by the dies. Drapery lines at the base of the bust are intricately detailed and the hair is sharply defined. A sunken area of the planchet left of the portrait resulted in a lack of definition at the face and at CTORI, but this is the only complaint that can be made, and it's a trivial one at that, given the production issues that plagued the series. The obverse is a touch off-center, favoring the 12:00 position, while the reverse was nearly struck in medallic alignment, but also slightly off-center to the benefit of an especially prominent date. Fabulous coin, fabulous quality, and a fabulous acquisition for the fortunate high bidder.
