(About The Images)
1797 1 Above 1 struck on TAL Token. ICG F-15. 1797 1 Above 1 struck on TAL Token. ICG F-15.
Lot Title: 1797 1 Above 1 struck on TAL Token. ICG F-15.
Description: The 1797 C-1 is a "1 above 1" variety, and simply has to be the most blatant repunched date in U.S. numismatic history. Not only was the initial punching of the "1" a full digit too high, but the fledgling mint didn't even make much effort to efface the errant digit. Furthermore, these were frequently struck on cut down coppers, and as ICG has indicated on the insert, detail remnants of a Talbot, Allum & Lee token remain in the obverse right field. The most notable defect is an old scratch on the right side of the wreath, though the ICG grade of F-15 seems to be a couple of points strong, all things considered.

This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.

Probably the most blatant "misplaced digit" in all U.S. numismatics, less than half-a-second is required to identify the half-a-cent C-1 die marriage, with "1 above 1" in the date. Splashes of...

1797 1 Above 1, Plain Edge (C-1, R.2). VG.
In all of U.S. numismatics, there surely cannot be a more blatant and grotesquely repunched date than that of the 1797 C-1 half-cent, most often referred to as "1 above 1", since calling it a 1 over 1...

1797 1 Above 1, Plain Edge, C-1, R-2. PCGS VF-25.
This Manley Die State 2.0 specimen has an appealing tan aspect. While there are no serious marks or blemishes to point out, there is just the slightest hint of granularity and a few toned over, old...
