(About The Images)
1840-D VF. 1840-D VF.
Lot Title: 1840-D VF.
Description: As the first quarter-eagle issued by the Dahlonega mint, 1840-D is a special date in the series, and this is a pleasing circulated example. From the outset, Dahlonega struggled to produce sharply struck coins, and this example is particularly mushy due to strike, with circulation taking its toll on whatever sharpness may have been originally in place. Lovely ash-grey patina flecks over mustard-gold surfaces, producing a perfect balance of vintage quality and attractive color. The most important detraction is a handful of small, ancient scratches on Liberty's neck. They are obviously old, and have toned over to an extent that they are hardly distracting.

Aside from its place in numismatic history, 1840-D is known in later die states to have produced coins with some of the best die cracks in the U.S. repertoire. This very late example displays the famous obverse bisecting die crack that spears the portrait from 10:00 to 4:00. Meanwhile, the reverse is divided up into pie-shaped pieces by an astonishing FIVE die cracks that radiate outward from the eagle's portrait, terminating on the rim at 12:00, 2:00, 6:00, 8:00 and 10:00. Add a second hand and you have a very nice stopwatch!

This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
