Lot Title:
1787 Vermont Copper, "Britannia" Variety (Ryder-13, R.1, 109,6 grains) F.
Description:
Ryder-13 is the only Vermont copper that features "Britannia" on the reverse, and these were struck at Machins Mills, undoubtedly with clandestine purposes in mind. Technically, the "Britannia" legend is difficult to see on this moderately worn example, but this was the intent of the manufacturers, nor is the date readily visible. Thus, these could easily be mistaken as British halfpence. Coincidence? Hardly! These were purposefully struck to look worn in order to evade detection (thus they are "evasion pieces"). Surfaces are rather nicely preserved and present attractive two-tone coloration. 109.6 grains and grades at least Fine, if not better.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
