Lot Title: 1786 Vermont Copper. The "Baby Head" variety (Ryder 9, 104.9 grains, R.3). VG/surface roughness.
Description: Ryder-9 is considered by specialists to be the first attempt at creation of a Vermont bust-type copper token, after conclusion of the Vermont landscape series. Success of the initial version of the new format is debatable, since the grossly misshapen head has the immediate visual impact of a baby's profile, complete with a small face and unformed chin attached to a large, bulbous head. Further, nearly every example of Ryder-9 is struck on low quality copper, further suggesting change in the air during transition to the new design. On the other hand, this is probably a nicer "baby head" than most, since the planchet actually displays very nice color, and the surfaces are not nearly as corroded as competing examples, with widespread but minor surface roughness noticeable across the left third of the obverse, along with a void at the far left. Centering is excellent on both sides, permitting the 1786 date to be fully readable, and only the small Liberty cap resting on top of the pole falls off the flan. The legends are fully contained, even though wear has rendered "AUCTOPI" and "INDE" essentially indecipherable. Specialists should find this to be an eminently collectable example of Ryder-9.

This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
