(About The Images)
1849 Open Wreath (with L). PCGS MS-63. 1849 Open Wreath (with L). PCGS MS-63.
Lot Title: 1849 Open Wreath (with L). PCGS MS-63.
Description: Recently, the 1849 gold dollar has become collected "with L" or "without L", and this is the more common type "with", though this is not indicated on the PCGS slab. An outstanding coin on most counts, with slick, attractive luster and lovely canary-gold color, the only noticeable grade detriment is a series of tiny hairline scratches that parallel the bridge of Liberty's nose. Luckily, on such a tiny coin, they cannot be seen except under a strong loupe.
Low Estimate: $900.00
High Estimate: $1,000.00

1849 Open Wreath. NGC MS-61.

1047The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/24/2009$725.00
1849 Open Wreath. PCGS MS-62.
Seemingly slightly better than the assigned MS-62 grade, persistent searching leads to the discovery of some wispy horizontal hairlines in the obverse fields. There is more cartwheel effect than one...
1048The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/24/2009$2,400.00
1849 Open Wreath and 1849 Closed Wreath. MS-64.
Below grades of AU, there is not a huge disparity in value between the two gold dollar types of 1849, but in middle mint state grades, the scarcity (and therefore the value) of the "open wreath" type...
867The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$2,400.00
1849 Open Wreath. PCGS MS-64.
Prodigious mint luster swirls about both sides, complementing the charming amber-gold patina. Very well struck, and just faintly abraded with minor vertical hairlines across the obverse.

1849 Open Wreath. NGC MS-62.
