Lot Title:
1850 $5 MOFFAT. PCGS VF-35.
Description:
Moffat & Co. was unquestionably the most important of the early private gold coin minters, with a solid reputation for quality and integrity as an assayer. They were held in equal or higher esteem than the United States mint herself! The design is undeniably and intentionally similar in appearance to Federal issues, except that MOFFAT & Co appears on the headband in place of "LIBERTY", and the reverse legend states "SMV [Standard Mint Value] CALIFORNIA GOLD". This canary-gold example is graded VF-35 by PCGS and has seen simple, honest circulation, the only detraction being a trio of adjacent bagmarks on the reverse right side.
