(About The Images)
1889 PCGS MS-66. 1889 PCGS MS-66.
Lot Title: 1889 PCGS MS-66.
Description: 1889 was the last year that gold dollars were struck for regular commerce, resulting in a large number saved as souvenirs, and on top of that, it is one of the best struck issues in the series. Thus, it is no surprise to find one in high grade, and it is an ideal issue for type purposes. Liberty's portrait is slightly more textured than the surrounding fields for this very-gem example, yet the overall impression is simply that of a typically lustrous coin. Since there are no noticeable abrasions or hairlines on either side, it is likely the grade was determined by a number of tiny flyspecks across each side.
Low Estimate: $1,900.00

1066The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$3,500.00
1889 PCGS MS-67.
Mintage: 29,000. Traditionally, collectors often assemble type sets with preference given "first year of type" coins, but there are many who enjoy procuring the "final year of type", for which this...
787The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$875.00
1889 PCGS MS-64.
Technically, MS-64 fits well, given rather mundane luster and glossy highpoint detail. However, the appearance offers something different with intriguing olive-tan toning overall, encircled by a...
996The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$1,850.00
1889 NGC MS-66.
When an amazing amount of energetic luster is compressed into the surface area of such a little coin, the results are undeniably dynamic. This piece shimmers with the expected vibrancy of a powerful...
777The Collectors' Auction 2010 on 10/15/2010$310.00
1889 MS-60.
A low mintage date, but common due to contemporary hoarding of all the scarcer mint issues. Frosty and lustrous, but somewhat dull, perhaps from being dipped many years ago.
778The Collectors' Auction 2010 on 10/15/2010$1,026.00
1889 PCGS MS-64.
One of the easiest gold dollar issues to find "nice" since a low emission of 29,000 ensured light use of the dies, and the date was hoarded, making many available to posterity. The MS-64 grade makes...
779The Collectors' Auction 2010 on 10/15/2010$1,650.00
1889 PCGS MS-66.
One of the several well-known low mintage hoard dates of the late gold-dollar series, this 1889 displays much less prooflike quality than some examples, and in fact, both sides are fully frosted and...
727The Collectors' Auction 2009 on 10/16/2009$2,300.00
1889 PCGS MS-65 (OGH).
Despite low mintages (or perhaps because of), gold dollars of 1878 through 1889 are legendary for high quality, and this example does not disappoint. Housed in a PCGS rattler holder, the powerful...
887The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$1,350.00
1889 NGC MS-64.
As shown by the notice accompanying the lot, NGC suggests this coin as a candidate for conservation, although the surfaces reveal no particular residues, and merely a handful of minor copper spots of...
822The Midwest Winter Sale 2008 on 02/08/2008$750.00
1889 gold dollar, MS-62
Pleasing luster despite some discoloration in the lower left obverse fields. Light mint frost on the devices is typical of the issue and provides a bit of eye appeal. Nicely lustrous with a good...
939The Collectors' Auction 2007 on 10/19/2007$1,900.00
1889 NGC MS-65.
Dense patination has settled comfortably across the entire surface of this lovely coin. The result is an unusually attractive, wholly natural, and original quality that connoisseurs of choice pieces...
940The Collectors' Auction 2007 on 10/19/2007$3,000.00
1889 NGC MS-67.
NGC shows a population of 190 from 1,612 submitted for this final year of issue for the gold dollar denomination. Only 15 have achieved a higher attribution, all designated as MS-68. Splendidly...
931The Midwest Summer Sale 2007 on 07/27/2007$3,000.00
1889 NGC MS-67.
Final year of issue example that displays a magnificent satinlike quality. A superb yellow-gold aspect reflects from its surfaces. Also, a couple of faint die breaks appear on its reverse. The...
913The Midwest Winter Sale 2007 on 02/09/2007$3,400.00
1889 NGC MS-67.
This virtually pristine example, from the terminal year of this denomination, has a copious pink blush gracing its opulent yellow-gold surfaces. Velvetlike in appearance, it glows with a wondrous...
995The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/17/2006$390.00
1889 NGC MS-62.
An extremely bold strike is observed on bright lustrous surfaces that display a splendid sunny yellow aspect. If not for some very light hairlines, and a slightly toned orange scuff on the reverse,...
