Lot Title: 1785 Vermont Copper. "VERMONTS" variety. (Ryder 2, R.4 to R.3). PCGS F-15/Struck 20% Off Center..
Description: An astonishing and wholly remarkable example of the 1785 Vermont Landscape token, each side is struck off-center by about 20% (per PCGS), northeast on the obverse, and correspondingly southeast on the reverse. Thus, the date is fully displayed, although RES. PUBLICA is predictably completely missing, and on the reverse, only DECIMA is fully readable. While Vermont coppers of any type are seldom perfectly centered, it is certainly quite a spectacle to see one this far off kilter.

So, what to make of this particular Vermont Landscape? The planchet itself is intriguing, since it is dark and possesses modest but surprisingly consistent roughness that actually gives a somewhat pleasing matte appearance overall. Of strongest interest to the researcher is the unstruck portion of the planchet, particularly at the upper left of the reverse, since that gives the best indication of what the minter was working with at the time these coins were struck. What is noticeable here is a huge, shallow planchet void in the unstruck area, which helps to explain why these tokens (and others of contemporary origin) so often appear with gaping voids, planchet fissures and scratches. Indeed, several short, subtle dark scratches on the obverse appear to have been present prior to striking. Thus, one can safely assume that the minter was not exactly working with top-notch raw materials. Despite this example's specific "problems", that portion of the landscape that was actually imparted to the planchet is actually fairly sharp, the sun displaying both eyes and finely delineated rays. The rays extending from the all-seeing Eye of Providence are also finely detailed, so it appears the dies themselves were at least of passable workmanship. This is simply one of those coins that is so humble and so easy to enjoy for its many foibles that a "grade" almost comes as a distraction.
