Lot Title: 1798 Point 9 Close Date/Arc Stars/Five Berries (B-9, BB-121, R.4). NGC XF Details/improperly cleaned.
Description: Defective arrangement of the stars above the eagle's head is unique to this reverse die, contributing to quick attribution of B-9, a rare (R.5) die marriage. This example technically may fall just shy of the XF grade, but then again, NGC has not certified that grade specifically ("XF details"), in light of an "improperly cleaned" disclaimer. To state that a bust dollar has been "cleaned" is almost like stating that fleas enjoy dog hair, since it is a valid assumption for just about any large coin of this vintage. In fact, any evidence of cleaning is hardly any worse than hundreds of competing coins that are more blatant in their level of offense, so most collectors will deem this an acceptable representative for such a difficult Bolender variety. Probably more important than that transgression is the buildup of a peculiar, waxy grey substance around the stars, most letters, much of Liberty's portrait and all the reverse motifs to corresponding proportion. It appears likely that some... Thing was caked onto this coin, and the perceived evidence of "cleaning" is the result of effort to remove the unknown contaminant. In retrospect, this coin was really "improperly conserved", but perhaps splitting hairs to this extent is not so important. Look for virtually invisible adjustment marks in Liberty's middle tresses, near her ear, a number of peculiar, tiny digs in the lower obverse fields, and a minor scratch through the topmost two clouds on the reverse, as well as a couple of fairly minor rim contusions.
