The humble appeal of a well circulated gold coin is routinely overlooked by many collectors, and it is unfortunate, since such coins played such an important role during the developmental era of our country's history. During the 1840s, the first covered wagon train made the long and dangerous trek from Kansas to wide open spaces of California, the most popular "sport" was horseracing, and the word "millionaire", used to describe a handful of the most affluent Americans, first came into widespread usage. Here is an 1848-D half-eagle graded VF-25 by PCGS, although the reverse seems to grade a little higher than that. An uneven strike cause the obverse left side to be weakly struck, however, resulting in a slightly lower than expected grade. This is a marvelously well worn coin that displays 100% of it's original surface quality, as if it had just left the hands of a pioneer on that long wagon ride to the west coast. Really, can history get any better than this?
