Lot Title:
1913 AU/cleaned.
Description:
1913 is the first of three consecutive Philadelphia issues that close out low mintage production of Barber half-dollars, and as a key to the series, any example with plenty of detail is automatically desirable. Sadly, this near-mint example is affected by excessive hairlines from a harsh cleaning, and neither side displays more than a modicum of original luster. Remnants of dark tone in protected areas next to some letters suggest the coin was quite dark at one time, undoubtedly leading to a misguided desire to "enhance" the appeal. Patience while this coin rests in an album and regains some color is probably the best course.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.

Potent luster shimmers in the fields around all the major devices, but is rather heavily subdued in places by thick patina. Closer inspection proves that there is substantial PVC contamination,... |
