Lot Title:
1893-S AU.
Description:
This is an attractive 1893-S half-dollar, a semi-key to the series and probably a little tougher than price guides would have one believe. Each side is animated by luster that is reminiscent of an 1881-S silver dollar, with multiple cartwheel bands revolving energetically about an unseen axis. This is all the more remarkable since the coin is lightly circulated, and must have been volatile dynamite when it fell off the dies! Satisfying patina enhances the fields with original appeal, and some stray hairlines appear to be merely incidental.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.

No obvious evidence of wear can be found anywhere, but that can be partially attributed to moderately deep patina over the entire coin. Close inspection reveals minute contact marks slinging across... |
