Lot Title:
1841-O PCGS XF-40.
Description:
New Orleans first issued the ten-dollar gold denomination in 1841, and along with a paltry mintage of 2500 pieces, desirability as a type coin heaps pressure on the issue as a popular date in the series, leading to strong value in all grades. Furthermore, attrition from normal circulation completely depleted the supply of every existing uncirculated example, and none is known today above the AU level. By comparison to images of the finest known examples of 1841-O, this PCGS XF-40 possesses detail remarkably similar to coins graded ten points higher, and in addition, there are remnants of cartwheel effect barely noticeable on either side. Although not even a single individually distracting mark exists on either side, it must be noted that the fields are rather heavily affected by modest circulation contact marks, and their cumulative effect is probably a deduction of five points in grade. This is only important under magnification, since at arm's length, the myriad ticks are too small to be distracting. A tiny crumb of greenish verdigris can be seen resting atop the eagle's left (observed) wing.
