Lot Title:

1886 PCGS PF-64.
Description:
It is an irony of late nineteenth-century silver production that early business strike quarters and halves often featured better cameo contrast than contemporary proof coins! In the case of this proof 1886 half-dollar, scarcely any contrast between the brilliant devices and mirrored fields can be seen, yet the reflectivity of the fields even between each of the shield stripes provide obvious indications of proof status. Further, this is an astoundingly well detailed coin, with every strand of hair on Liberty's head sharply defined, as is every single one of the eagle's feathers. Molten gold patina pours across each side, encountering parts of the rim on both sides with a sudden blend of deeper royal-gold. The overall grade seems to have been assessed primarily on the basis of some haze in the fields and very minor hairlines.
