(About The Images)
1809 III Edge (O-109a, R.3) NGC MS-65*. 1809 III Edge (O-109a, R.3) NGC MS-65*.
Lot Title: 1809 III Edge (O-109a, R.3) NGC MS-65*.
Description: When discussing early half-dollars in very high grade, many collectors are understandably satisfied to obtain a single capped bust to serve as a type example (speaking of the lettered edge type, of course), since a date run even with no varieties would entail acquisition of about thirty coins. If the pursuit of quality includes more aesthetic consideration than a mere numeric grade, then an excellent place to begin the search for an ideal example would be in NGC slabs with those given an additional "star" designation. The "star" is an indicator of superior eye-appeal, and whether or not one always agree with its application, it certainly narrows the field of choices. Here is an 1809 O-109a, and it has been certified by NGC as grading MS-65 "star", and the cachet of an early date in the series only adds to the appeal of this piece.

Even ignoring the "star", population reports show that NGC has certified eight coins in MS-65 for the date, with three exceeding that level. This may not matter much, since this is a remarkable gem example, and it is hard to imagine many coins surpassing its visual appeal regardless of technical grade level. Impossibly vibrant luster swoops and sweeps through the fields with alacrity seldom seen with early silver coins struck without a collar, with marvelous flowline luster well defined between and within the star points.

The next layer of complexity that comprises the beauty of this gem is the electrifying color whose spectrum of progression is at once familiar to those who enjoy album toning, yet astonishing for its richness. Robust turquoise-blue and aqua-green saturates the outer reaches of each side, engulfing the viewer in a veritable tidal wave of ocean colors, while the central devices remain aloof above it all, projecting an extraordinary luminescence derived from magenta-rose hues that compete with navy-blue accents. There is probably no list of numismatic superlatives that can adequately convey the intense beauty of this toning, thoroughly energized by that profound mint luster.

From a technical standpoint, the MS-65 grade leave nothing to the imagination. Use of a loupe proves that the surfaces are virtually immaculate and formidable in their level of preservation. A handful of bagmarks located on Liberty's central portrait are the only technical grade limitation, barely keeping an MS-66 upgrade at bay. However, their presence seems almost trivial by comparison to that look, and cannot deny the completely gem overall appearance. And if a nicer reverse can be found, steal it! As stated, there are technically "finer coins" in existence according to population, but it won't matter after completing review of this marvelous piece.
