Lot Title:
1864 NGC PF-67 Cameo.
Description:
(ex-NGC 958971-014) While cameo proof coinage has been the standard for decades at the U.S. mint, the thrill of seeing such contrast on mid-nineteenth century proof coins never diminishes, and this pristine superb-gem exemplifies highest expectations. Flawless silvery brilliance dominates each side and exhibits Liberty's portrait to best advantage, especially since the devices are finely textured with snow-white mint frost. Without a doubt, strike definition is about as sharp as it can possibly be, with every fold in Liberty's gown carefully detailed, and every kernel of grain individually brought up with precision on the reverse. Proper description requires mention of a few tiny planchet flaws in the obverse right field, including a pair of interesting threadlike strike-throughs evident in the vicinity of "CA", and under certain viewing angles, exceedingly faint, trivial hairlines can be seen traveling through the fields.
