Lot Title:
1870 PF-63.
Description:
Previously described as follows: "Storage in a paper environment can often induce the type of toning noticed for this 1870 proof half-dollar, with chartreuse and lavender tones that intermingle on the obverse, highlighted by thin traces of violet throughout. The reverse is even more interesting, because the chartreuse-olive color is offered even more competition by swirling finger of vivid lilac and cinnamon-gold along the right side. Fortunately, the patina is not so thick as to inhibit surface quality, and one can easily see the proof reflectivity emanating from the fields. A lovely coin that is relatively free of hairlines, as becomes the grade." Since that time, attempt was made to certify it at PCGS, and they declined a grade, providing a Genuine-91 code instead for "questionable color". Ultimately, it is left up to the high bidder to decide the true value.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
