(About The Images)
1865 NGC PF-65. 1865 NGC PF-65.
Lot Title: 1865 NGC PF-65.
Description: Extraordinary, deep russet-gold, magenta and navy-plum tones thoroughly drench both sides of this overwhelmingly attractive proof half-dollar, issued near the end of the Civil War. The surfaces appear deceptively dark at many viewing angles, but catch the light at just the right angle and the astounding rainbow tones flare into vibrant life with scintillating brilliance. Technical affirmation includes an incredibly deep, sharp strike that has brought up every one of the finest details to incredible extent, including full length and roundness of all of Liberty's fingers on both hands. The clasp that holds the drapery over her left (observed) shoulder is fully detailed! The eagle's claws are all sculpted with extreme precision, and not only are the inner and outer delineation of his pupil visible, but incredibly, the minute feathers at the juncture of his beak are fully defined. Truly, it is impossible to imagine a more perfectly impressed rendition of this classic design, and your fearless cataloger does not recall ever seeing a finer strike than what is observed here. A very few trivial wispy hairlines in the left obverse field are scarcely noticeable in light of the incredible tone, but do serve as technical grade limitations. Regardless, this is just simply a devastatingly attractive proof, and one that has duly earned the Scotsman Cataloger's Choice award. Quite frankly, NGC was remiss in their duties by failing to designate a "star" to this crown jewel.
