Lot Title:
1851 51 over 81 (N-3). PCGS MS-64BN.
Description:
A classic blunder in the large-cent series, whereby the first two digits of the date were not only punched into the die upside down, but also on the wrong side of the exergue! Characteristic of N-3 is the extensive and prominent die polish lines visible throughout the obverse fields, especially in the date area, where attempt was obviously made to efface the error prior to repunching the correct digits. This is a mildly lustrous example that displays ideal brown color, as well as a few contact marks on Liberty's portrait.
