Inexpensive in grades below XF, the 1866-S becomes somewhat scarcer in AU and better grades, which puts this NGC XF-45 example right on the cusp of the big price jump. Carrot-gold toning endows this example with pleasing vintage appeal, helped along by distinct luster on each side, but the soft strike notable for many early San Francisco issues is unmistakable. Liberty's portrait and the eagle's motif both display some softness of strike.
