Lot Title:

1823 Copper Restrike (Jules Reiver Collection). PCGS MS-64BN.
|
Description:
|
The "other" restrike famed within the large-cent series (see "1804 restrike" above), 1823 N-3 is a smidgeon closer in fact to what a restrike is supposed to be, since the obverse die really was used to strike genuine, circulating 1823 dated cents. However, the reverse was substituted with an 1813 die, and again, these tokens were nefariously manufactured outside the mint for purposes unknown, by parties unknown. Of course, this merely adds to their present-day mystique!
Attributed to the Jules Reiver Collection on the PCGS slab insert, about 20% of this restrike displays evidence of original mint red, albeit in subdued fashion. Luster emanates cleanly from between the stars and reverse lettering, projecting faint cobalt-blue iridescence under some viewing angles. Overall preservation is highly reminiscent of a Randall hoard coin, with slightly mottled interplay between the reddish and brown areas, and a couple of minor carbon patches including one resting like a mouse atop Liberty's head. Details are surprisingly sharp, considering they were imparted by dies about ready to explode from overuse. An always intriguing coin!
