1798 Knob 9, 5 Lines 10 Arrows (B-6, BB-96, R-3). VG.

Description:

It is a little ironic that some advanced collectors (however one wishes to interpret that term) have learned through experience that often, a wonderfully original coin in lower grade can prove to be more appealing than a bright example in higher grade. In other words, it isn't really necessary to always "buy the best you can afford" if something awfully nice comes along for a much lower price. This 1798 B-6 dollar displays considerable wear, yet it features such delightful surface quality and vintage color that it can be called nothing less than outstanding. One factor contributing to that opinion is the very consistent, evenly distributed slate-grey patina draped across each side, but the uniform, even wear that has smoothed the surfaces naturally. Liberty's portrait shows the most wear above her lower tresses, yet all main details are nicely outlined, and "BUS UNUM" is still readable on the reverse. Simple, humble and charming!
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.

Moderate hairlines scribbled across the obverse indicate purposeful cleaning, although the reverse seems to have escaped for the most part. Fortunately, someone was astute enough to leave the coin in... |
