Lot Title:
1787 "Machin's Mills or Atlee Imitation Halfpence", 108 grains. XF, corroded.
Description:
Amazing sharpness of detail is present on either side, with none of the peripheral weakness normally seen on Atlee's imitation halfpence. It may be because the planchet is a little wider than normal for these furtively struck coins, allowing more evenly distributed striking pressure. This a dark example, with consistent and moderate microporosity that detracts from absolute sharpness, and lessens visual contrast, leading to a copper that could easily be mistaken for a lower grade. Actual details are right at the AU level, although assigning a numeric details grade would be fruitless.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
