Lot Title:

1787 Massachusetts Half Cent. Ryder 2-A, Rarity-5, 69.7 grains. XF.
|
Description:
|
The nearly dark walnut-brown surfaces are splashed in areas by pleasing pecan-tan accents, which prevents the color scheme from becoming overly monotonous. This half-cent features a high relief, very well defined obverse rim that encircles the peripheral lettering to perfection and provides an unexpectedly clean, distraction-free appearance for that side. Even the Indian stands in proud high relief from the matte fields, his bow at rest in a gesture of peace, but an arrow readily clasped in his left hand -- just in case. The eagle on the reverse is somewhat better detailed than typical for the type, though the denomination is a little faint from wear and a touch of corrosion in the vicinity. Feathers are nicely sculpted in sharp three-dimensional quality, and the 1787 date is extremely bold. Even the eagle's talons are hammered, and MASSACHUSETTES is a touch weaker at the center merely due to a slightly off center strike. No circulation marks affect either side. Perhaps all that bars this diminutive early copper from perfection is trivial planchet roughness that scarcely affects the hard luster at all. An exceptional early piece!
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
