Lot Title:
1858 NGC MS-65.
Description:
Absolutely stark aluminum-white and utterly pristine, there is not the slightest amount of toning visible anywhere. The fascinating brushed-aluminum appearance can be theorized by two factors that conspired in fascinating manner. A profusion of fresh die polish lines in the dies sweep across both sides, but the planchet already had numerous tiny striations produced as part of its manufacturing process, and combination of the two sets of divergent texture lines took place at about 90 degrees difference in orientation when the planchet was struck, causing innumerable intersections of the competing striations to produce the metallic sheen. Examine this coin with care, and perhaps formulate your own theory!
