1799 (S-189, R-2) PCGS Genuine (Good details/environmental damage).
Description:
Because the 1799 large-cent is so common, PCGS must have decided that there was no point in actually grading this example -- even though that is what grading companies are paid to do. Looking past the cataloger's sarcasm, collectors will notice that this example actually possesses sharpness very near VG-8, and may in fact be all the way there despite the uneven surface quality that results from corrosion. Evidently lightly burnished and nicely recolored, the appearance would be somewhat less palatable if not for this smoothing technique. As it stands, deep brown and slightly glossy patina now shows across both sides, with just a hint of lighter tint on the details. While LIBERTY and 1799 are both easily seen on the obverse (not something to take for granted for this issue), reverse legends are only mostly readable, with imagination required to "see" UNITED. Sadly, the denomination is hardly present in the center of the wreath and the fraction completely gone, but the leaves can be readily seen in profile against the dark fields. Seven points of detail, leading to an EAC 3+ estimate.
