Lot Title:
1887/6 NGC PF-64 Cameo.
Description:
For any other date in the three-cent nickel series, a strongly clashed die would instantly arouse suspicion of a business strike, but of course, 1887/6 is considered a proof-only issue of the denomination. The ivory-white devices of this shimmering example exhibit much contrast, and the overall appearance is that of a higher grade, so one must assume that some very minor carbon spots, strewn mostly along the obverse rim, are the impetus for a conservative grade. Against the upper left reverse rim is an apparently flawed area of the planchet that forms a crescent following the contour of the wreath.

Not only is the overdate obvious, but the misplaced date that displays horizontal raised lines in the obverse dentils is visible as well. A little bit of cameo contrast, plus fully original fields,... |

As the only overdate issue within this series, it is quite popular and always in demand. The overdate feature is quite bold on this visually superb issue endowed with a delicate golden nuance. To... |
