Lot Title:
1851-O NGC AU-58.
Description:
Glossy from an old cleaning, this 1851-O has now acquired a fascinating reflective appearance that represents an unusual compromise between original mottled planchet texture and luminous surface quality. The effect is tough to describe! "Metallic luster" is the phrase that comes to mind, though this conveys little useful information since every coin is made of metal and has luster. It must be seen to be understood. At any rate, 1851-O is a significantly better date in gold eagle series, and at the AU-58 level, it is a downright scarce coin.
