Lot Title: 1789 Mott Token, thick planchet, plain edge. Breen 1020, Rarity-3, 150.7 grains. XF, Large Planchet Clip..
Description: Here is a coin that will appeal to the connoisseur of the truly unusual - a 1789 Mott token that features not one, but two planchet clips. Unmistakable on the left side is a huge, gaping curved area where a previous planchet was cut out of the copper strip for blanks, and on the right is a much smaller clip where the next was again cut out a little too close. Study the protected edge area within the clips, and notice the vertical tool marks left by the tool that was used to stamp out the blanks -- really fascinating! One can envision the goal of economy-of-resources driving the planchet cutter to space each stamp of the copper strip as closely together as possible in order to produce the maximum possible number of planchets from a single strip, and to subsequently simply accept and strike the defective planchet rather than sending it back to the melting pot for subsequent remanufacture into more copper strip.

Struck from late dies, the Roman clock is affected by the familiar large internal die break at the upper left corner, and the eagle is rather faintly detailed, the result of progressing concavity of the aging reverse die. Mott tokens are frequently seen a little off center, and that is the case here, the obverse and reverse both shifted upward slightly (remember that this was struck in medallic alignment). Still, the peripheral legends are managed to remain on the planchet - except for where the clip to a huge bite out of the lettering. Intriguing, unusual and endlessly fascinating.

This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
