Lot Title:
1788 Massachusetts Cent. Ryder 7-M, Rarity-5, 155.4 grains. XF.
Description:
(Ex. Stack's 5/2007: 507) Deep walnut-brown surfaces project surprisingly nice eye appeal for a coin this dark, perhaps because the important design elements are nicely touched with lighter reddish-olive tone that helps to embolden the already strong details. Under magnification, surfaces display consistent mild to moderate micro-porosity that is really not that distracting, and is reminiscent of a coin with myriad tiny circulation abrasions. More important is a rather enormous planchet lamination that folds over and bisects the entire obverse, nearly following the right edge of the standing Indian motif. It was already developed at the time the coin was struck, which is why it is embedded into the planchet so well. Examination of the upper edge suggests the lamination is an eight of an inch wide in some places!! No major digs or dings affect this coin, though there some ancient dull scratches that are nearly camouflaged by the deep patina. Slightly glossy and extremely-fine or so, and the consignor indicates that this piece might place at or near the bottom of the condition census for Ryder 7-M.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
