1786 Vermont Copper, "Mailed Bust Left" variety. Ryder-11, Rarity-4, 116.8 grains. VF. 1786 Vermont Copper, "Mailed Bust Left" variety. Ryder-11, Rarity-4, 116.8 grains. VF.
Lot Title: 1786 Vermont Copper, "Mailed Bust Left" variety. Ryder-11, Rarity-4, 116.8 grains. VF.
Description: VERMON is exceedingly sharp by virtue of the fact that the planchet was struck off center by about 5%, favoring strong presence of elements on the left side. By the same token (copper token of course), AUCTORI nearly falls off the right side of the flan, and suffers the further injustice of having been struck over a defective part of the planchet, affected as it is by natural striae. Centering of the reverse is correspondingly shifted right, with "INDE:" very bold, but ET LIB not seen at all on the right. Interestingly, the date gives the illusion of bleeding off the planchet as well, with "17" and the top of the "8" being the only discernible digits, and it seems likely that this planchet was tapered just a little at the time of production, thinning slightly toward the right. Honey-brown surfaces are atypically nice for the type, displaying almost satiny smoothness and some reflectivity, as well as the merest breath of bluish iridescence. One usually expects to find Vermonts on ugly, rough planchets, but this one blissfully departs from that norm. In spite of moderate wear, the obverse effigy displays much of the finer design elements, and the seated figure on the reverse holds sharply defined branches in her outstretched hand. As a type, Vermont "mailed bust, left" coppers are generally similar in visual treatment to the more familiar Connecticut coppers, but much scarcer.

This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
