Lot Title:

1787 Connecticut Copper, first "CONNFC" variety. Miller 43.1-Y, Rarity-2, 134.4 grains. F.
|
Description:
|
Exceptionally attractive color is accomplished by a combination of leather-brown fields atop which rests lovely pecan-tan devices, providing the perfect "circulation cameo" appearance for a colonial copper. The obverse is a little off center toward the top, causing the last couple of letters of AUCTORI to just very barely bleed off the edge of the planchet, though the cinquefoil stop following managed to just stay on the flan. On the reverse, centering is a tad more of a problem, since the bottom of the date is chopped off, but of course, the obverse spelling error is the focal point of this Redbook variety. The consignor notes that this planchet was cut out of the copper strip from a broken cutter which produced the distinct "tab" of metal adhering to the rim at 7:00 as seen from the obverse, and other early coppers are known with this same characteristic. A delightful representative from the fifth member of the original thirteen colonies.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
