Lot Title:
1845 V-1. NGC MS-65 Eliasberg.
Description:
Eliasberg (Bowers & Ruddy, Oct. 1982, Lot 965) Aside from the venerable Eliasberg pedigree, the grade of this 1845 half-dime assures its desirability, as NGC has given a higher grade to only five coins (and PCGS sixteen). Steam-grey patina has developed some mother-of-pearl character, fading into subtle tints of sky-blue color next to the rims, and splashes of more brilliant silver appear in isolated areas of the reverse. As described in the original sale, clash marks are noticeable on either side. The series of Seated Liberty half-dimes is one of the few for which Eliasberg coins become available with regularity. Pedigree as given by B&R: Chapman brothers, private sale, May 1897, to J.M. Clapp. Clapp estate, 1942, to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr.

Vanilla-grey patina inundates the surfaces with at least a semblance of vintage quality, and is light enough to have barely any impact on the slightly prooflike character of the reverse. Overall, the... |

Marvelous detail sharpness is somewhat unexpected of a half-dime from an era when questionable strike quality was the norm. All but the final two stars are finely struck, and Liberty's portrait is... |
